WHAT IS CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY?

CranioSacral Therapy is a gentle non invasive treatment which works to free restrictions within the CranioSacral system. The CranioSacral system is composed of a waterproof membrane that encases the brain and spinal cord, cerebrospinal fluid is contained within this membrane. The CranioSacral therapist uses various techniques to locate where these restrictions may be, and applies very gentle techniques to bring the system back into balance. One of the ways in which a restriction is located is by assessing the quality of the CranioSacral rhythm.

The CranioSacral rhythm is produced by the production of cerebro-spinal fluid. This fluid is produced by the choroid plexus which are found in the ventricles in the centre of the brain, and is mainly made up from blood plasma. Cerebro-spinal fluid circulates through the ventricles and surrounds and bathes the brain and central nervous system. It provides nerve cells with nutrients, and acts as a cushion for the cortex, part of our brain structure. Disorders of cerebro-spinal fluid can affect intracranial blood flow creating a variety of negative reactions throughout the body

The CranioSacral system is encased in connective tissue. This connective tissue, when unrestricted, allows the cranium (the bones in the skull) and sacrum (tail bone) to move freely and accommodate the expansive and contractive influence of the CranioSacral rhythm.

Trauma and stress can affect the various connective tissues that influence the CranioSacral system. This can cause restrictions and patterns of strain affecting the ability of the cranial bones, spine and sacrum to move freely. This will change the quality and performance of the CranioSacral rhythm and can potentially create pain and illness.

WHAT TO EXPECT

When you come for CranioSacral treatment a full medical history will be taken. The treatment is done through clothing with you lying on a treatment couch. The therapist will then use their hands to palpate and listen to your body, and follow its leads in order to help you. This can mean that the area being touched is distant from the site of pain or discomfort. We want to find the problem, not get misled by the symptom. The pressure applied by the therapist is very light and rarely exceeds five grams. This is to prevent the body from going into a protective response, and allows for maximum relaxation.
